Project Feature: Port Melbourne

We love building new homes throughout Melbourne’s inner city suburbs, but the bustling bayside suburb of Port Melbourne holds a special place in our hearts. When the opportunity to build an ambitious new home in this lively suburb arose, we were very excited to get started!

Our Port Melbourne project was completed in February 2021 and is testament to our team’s expert craftsmanship and attention to detail. Cleverly designed by the team at Peter Wright Architects to suit a narrow block, the completed two-storey home includes four bedrooms, as well as a study, generous open-plan living area, wine cellar and even a cinema.

Outside, the Port Melbourne home features a fully tiled pool and spa, alfresco dining area, pool house, neatly landscaped garden and a double garage; not an easy feat within such a constricted block.

We worked closely with Dana Meadows at Peter Wright Architects to ensure the alfresco area was spacious and comfortable, despite the restraints of the site. We also ensured the indoor living space connected seamlessly with the outdoor living area so our client could entertain and relax with ease.

The Port Melbourne home features a futuristic exterior, built from a combination of grey polished concrete, Alucobond matte sheet cladding and aluminium interlocking cladding in matte black. This modern mixed-material façade sets the tone for the rest of the home.

As you enter the timber front door, it’s immediately apparent that the home has found a happy medium between the natural world and the man-made; between inside and out.

Timber is carried throughout the space, with immaculate timber veneer cabinetry a star of the kitchen, and European oak floors laid throughout for flow. Generous high ceilings help the home feel spacious, while high-end finishes and clever design elements give the home a luxurious, elevated feel.

A grand staircase, in timber veneer to match the modern kitchen, connects the two storeys of this Port Melbourne home, with an quality that radiates the impression of a much larger home. Upstairs, the three generous bedrooms are accompanied by separate bathrooms, while the master features a spacious ensuite. We also installed substantial skylights in each bedroom to let the sunlight stream in.

Natural light and a sense of spaciousness were integral to our client’s brief for this home – especially given the narrow Port Melbourne block we were building on. We collaborated closely with our client and the team at Peter Wright Architects to play with the proportions of the home and ensure that it felt luxuriously lofty, above all else. This required rigorous planning and a meticious sense of attention to detail by our expert construction team.

As the block was so narrow, deliveries were a little more difficult and had to be scheduled like clockwork to ensure works could progress as planned. In addition to this, the soil on the property was relatively sandy – with a basement constructed below sea level, this added an additional challenge for our team, and meant continuous care and diligence needed to be maintained during construction to keep the area dry.

The SECON team love a challenge and we are pleased to report that we were able to overcome everything that this Port Melbourne new home build threw our way. This is largely due to the collaboration between client, architect and builder and our construction team’s high level of skill and attention to detail.

We are incredibly proud of the new home we were able to build for our Port Melbourne client and excited to say that the results have exceeded their expectations. As with all of our projects, this custom home was delivered on time and within budget. Another SECON success story!
